A performance Sample is a 1-2 minute video sample of your/the student's artistry. These samples are used for placement purposes only.
JazzLab introduces students to language and techniques of jazz through daily masterclasses with BMS master jazz faculty and guests, jazz combos, improvisation workshops, and jazz theory/ear-training class. The program will conclude with a performance on Friday, August 23.
Jazz Masterclasses: BMS faculty and guest artists will demonstrate jazz techniques, guiding students as they are encouraged to experiment with rhythm, improvisation, and creative expression.
Jazz Combos: Students are placed in jazz combos based on performance samples. In each combo, students are given the freedom to think and play creatively in improvisation while maintaining the collaboration required of any musical ensemble.
Jazz Improv: Jazz players need to listen and respond musically in unique ways that classical players are rarely asked to do, developed through improvisation study. This class will introduce students to a wide variety of musical concepts and structures that will help them practice and develop their improvisation skills among peers.
Each day includes snacks and lunch (students are required to bring a brown bag lunch).
Note: This program is open to instrumentalists between 10-18 of all levels, generally after completing a minimum of 2 years of private instrument study (within or outside of BMS) and having attained basic music literacy.
