Chamber music groups rehearse repertoire of the classical tradition from the early baroque to contemporary periods. Groups are open to instrumentalists of all ages and levels, generally after having completed a minimum of 2 years’ private instrument study, and having attained basic music literacy. Rehearsals emphasize listening skills, musical communication, stylistic interpretation, and balance of texture.

Fall 2020 Chamber Music will be largely conducted remotely and will comprise a total of 12 weeks, 7 of which are coached rehearsals in participants’ assigned groups. The remaining 5 weeks will feature special workshops relevant to chamber music, for which players from across the program will recombine to explore specific topics and further develop their knowledge as well rounded chamber players. Such topics include, but are not limited to: masterclasses for specific instrument groups (strings, winds, piano, etc.); score study and analysis; workshops on specific composers or musical periods; cueing, phrasing, and breathing; and use of technology to assist remote rehearsal and recording projects. Opportunities are provided throughout the semester for groups to share their work in both informal “salon” workshops and slightly more formalized recitals, as well as other virtual sharing platforms.

About Performing Ensemble Classes

Performing ensembles at Brookline Music School offer students the unique chance to work together in a social, collaborative atmosphere to sharpen their musical skills and have fun! Ensemble playing requires members to listen carefully to themselves and each other, building a strong sense of rhythm and meter, and a keen ear for intonation, articulation, and dynamics. Students of classical chamber music will be exposed to new composers, forms, and styles that will expand their musical imagination and knowledge. Jazz, pop, and rock ensembles allow endless group combinations and stylistic possibilities for instrumentalists and singers alike.

Placement in an ensemble is based off of an informal placement audition. Each group will receive a weekly coaching with one of our distinguished faculty members.
