Teaching Philosophy

I believe we get the most enjoyment out of playing when we each play with a technique that is most comfortable for us, incorporate favorite music into our learning, and have the ability to independently find ways to produce sounds that we find enjoyable. In teaching and in practice, I search for ways we can break down the multitasking of cello playing into easily manageable pieces, and then combine those pieces back into the big picture.

Teaching Biography

Alex has been teaching cello for over a decade, starting out in Southwest Virginia as a member of the Virginia Tech String Project. He has taught students of all ages as part of the Roanoke Jefferson Center, the Palaver Music Center, and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. Currently, he teaches at the Brookline Music School, the Community Music Center of Boston, Fitchburg State University, the Dedham Music School, and Medfield Public Schools.

Performance Biography

As a soloist, Alex has performed with the New River Vally Philharmonic, and the University of Tennessee Symphony, and has an upcoming engagement with the Fermata Chamber Soloists in Cambridge, MA. As an orchestral musician, he currently performs regularly with the DuBois Symphony as principal cellist, the Cape Ann Symphony as assistant principal, the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Bedford Symphony, the Atlantic Symphony, and the Cape Symphony.
