This class will inspire students to think creatively, teaching fundamental techniques for both composition and improvisation. Students will gain an understanding of how to construct and embellish melodies, create chord progressions, write for several instruments, and use their ears to spontaneously improvise with other musicians. These skills will be gained through group and individual exercises, listening to/analysis of music in a variety of styles, and assigned projects. Music theory (scales, chords, and notation) will be covered and reinforced, but always to serve the creative process.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites: 2 years of private lessons on any instrument. Concurrent lessons preferred, but not required.
