This weekly class offers a variety of entry points for creative musical thinking in a fun and collegial environment: Students will compose short pieces for both solo instruments and small ensembles, all the while exploring and practicing the fundamentals of music theory, including rhythm, melody, and harmony, as well as musical texture and form. Students will apply their knowledge of theory to directly reveal how music achieves its expressive and narrative capabilities. As a flexible class ensemble, budding composers will also work together to develop, rehearse, and share original compositions with one another, and in school-wide recital performances.
Prerequisites: 2 years of private lessons on any instrument. Concurrent lessons preferred, but not required.
