Orchestra Skills for String Players

The perfect class for young string players new to ensemble-playing and beginning or soon to begin playing in a youth orchestra.

This class focuses on developing important orchestra-playing skills, including:

  • Interpreting and following a conductor
  • Matching bowings, articulations, and tone quality
  • Identifying melody versus accompaniment
  • Communicating with fellow players using eye contact and breath phrasing

Students will have the chance to workshop solo pieces relevant to class topics, and to prepare ensemble selections for performance at the semester’s end.

Instructor: Celia Zhang
Violinist Celia Zhang, a graduate of the Julliard and Yale schools of music, has enjoyed a diverse career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra performer. She has worked with some of history’s nest conductors, including James DePriest, Alan Gilbert, and Leonard Slatkin. Celia has been invited as a Fellowship recipient to festivals such as Aspen, Spoleto, and Music Academy of the West. Recent performances include appearances with the New Haven Symphony, Hartford Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Norwalk Symphony, and the Spoleto Festival Orchestra.
