Ages 4-6: recorder or Suzuki flute
Ages 7 and up: Suzuki or Traditional flute
Ages 9 and up: all winds
Woodwinds include the instruments of flute, recorder, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon, with the flute producing the highest sounds, and the bassoon producing the lowest sounds.
Many of the woodwind instruments require physical size and stamina, so we do not recommend starting most of these before age 9 (sometimes a large 8 year old would be ready to start). The exceptions to this are flute, recorder, and harmonica, which could all be started as young as age 4. We recommend flute students ages 4-6 start with the Suzuki Program, which involves a weekly private lesson and regular group lessons Students ages 7 and up (and sometimes 6) could choose to start with either Suzuki or Traditional lessons.
