Mission
Brookline Music
School seeks to awaken and nurture musical interest, appreciation, and artistic
excellence in a
friendly and stimulating atmosphere; to offer a high standard of
comprehensive music instruction to people of all
ages and backgrounds from the
local community; and to serve the community by teaching in multiple locations,
offering generous tuition assistance, and sponsoring a full schedule of concerts
and public performances
throughout the year.
History
Brookline Music
School, a private, nonprofit community school for the arts, is the oldest and
largest cultural
institution in Brookline. Founded in 1924 by the Brookline
Public Schools, the School became a private
organization in the 1940s and was
incorporated as a private, nonprofit school in 1967. In 1994, following a
successful capital campaign, the School moved into its permanent home in the
Hill-Kennard-Ogden House.
Brookline Music School
constitutes a unique model of cooperation between public and private sectors.
Its
original purpose was to enhance the Brookline Public School orchestras by
providing music lessons to the
children of Brookline after hours on school
premises. To this day, the Brookline Public Schools continue to
generously
donate classroom space to Brookline Music School for private music lessons.

Scholarship Program
We believe that music education is a joyful and enriching experience for people
of all ages. The ability to make music education available to everyone in the
community has always been of great importance to the School. A Scholarship
Program, funded primarily by the School’s Annual Fund, provides $40,000 annually
in tuition assistance to students who might not otherwise be able to take music
lessons.
Faculty Enrichment Program
The superb quality of the School’s educational offerings is made possible
by the high level of arts education, musicianship and pedagogical experience of
the faculty. Over half of our internationally trained faculty members hold a
Masters degree or higher. In order to attract and retain such stellar musicians,
a Faculty Enrichment Program awards grants so that faculty members may continue
to hone their skills with advanced training courses, workshops, masterclasses
and ongoing lessons.
Special Benefits
Brookline Music School has a variety of performance and learning opportunities
for private lesson students as part of a well-rounded curriculum.
Honors Program
The Honors Program offers the serious, young musician a more in-depth curriculum
and study program. In addition to frequent coaching and performances, regular
workshops and masterclasses are scheduled throughout the year. Visit the
Honors Program page.
Workshop/Evaluation Week
April 14-19, 2008 - One week in the spring is devoted to a workshop/evaluation
week for all private instruction students. In order for all students and faculty
to participate, these hour-long workshops take the place of the regular private
lesson that week. Each department determines the exact format in a relaxed,
supportive environment, where the teachers select the materials their students
present.
Progress Reports
Private lesson students receive written progress reports from their teachers at
the end of the first term. These reports address any areas of concern, and
provide students and parents with a focused summary of each student's work and
progress. At the end of the second term, teachers hold individual phone
conferences with their students’ parents.
Student Recitals
Regular student recitals are held monthly on Wednesdays and Sundays, with
additional days and times at the end of each term. These recitals are typically
a mix of instruments, ages, levels, and styles and are a great way for students
to gain exposure to a variety of musical possibilities. Students are encouraged
to play the same piece in more than one recital in order to gain confidence and
comfort in performing! View a list of our
school-wide recitals.
Vocal Coaching
Private voice coachings are an excellent supplement to voice lessons for
advanced and motivated students. Students receive a more in-depth study of song
interpretation, diction, staging and communication. Additional fee required.
Open Mike Nights
Students of all instruments are given the opportunity to perform jazz, pop and
Broadway tunes in an informal setting in the School’s Bakalar Recital Hall. This
event gives students the opportunity to sing, jam, perform with a microphone and
receive feedback from faculty. It's fun for the audience too! Sign up ahead of
time, or just come ready to perform. For more information please contact Laura
