ENSEMBLES

Jazz in July
A Two-Week Intensive Ensemble Program

John Purcell will again be offering his popular ensemble summer program.  Jazz in July offers students of all ages an opportunity to experience the excitement of group playing in a relaxed yet challenging atmosphere.  Ensembles will meet for 2 hours, three days per week for two weeks (total of 12 hours).  Novice, Intermediate and Advanced ensembles are available. Placement is determined by audition; improvising skills are not required.  Students will receive a CD at the end of each session.  For further information, placement and scheduling, please contact John directly at 617-964-8868 or jazzbms@aol.com.

Strings of Summer
A Week-Long Orchestral Program (Violin, viola, cello, and double bass)
For many young people, the best part about playing a string instrument is playing in a group.  This popular week-long chamber orchestra program is for all ages and levels.  While making new friends, students will hone their listening skills and receive masterclasses from our String Department Faculty, led by Irina Chirkova. There will be solo and small group opportunities for advanced students.  The week will end with a celebratory performance on Friday Evening at 6:00pm.  For more information on Strings of Summer, please call (617) 277-4593.

ARLY CHILDHOOD


Music & More  (Ages 3-7 years)
Now in its 13th year, the School’s Music & More Summer Arts Program is still going strong! This program offers children a wide range of music, dance and art activities in a lively, creative environment. The children are divided by age into small core groups, each with its own lead teacher to take them through the morning activities. In addition, all the children have opportunities to interact with each other and the talented faculty.
Cost: $500
Session I: Monday, July 9 – Friday, July 20  
Session II: Monday, July 23 – Friday, August 3 
Optional Stay & Play: noon- 2:00pm, $200 or $30 per day.
Optional Stay & Play with a Beginning Instrument Class: 1:00-2:00pm, $300 (piano, violin or percussion)

Music & Movement  (Ages 4 months to 7 months)
Encouraged by an attending parent or adult, babies and toddlers playfully engage with music that connects them to their everyday world.  Classes focus on stimulating a child’s social, emotional and physical development in a loving atmosphere.  Featured music comes from the folk tradition and includes chants, finger plays, bounces and movement.
Cost: $82
Dates: Classes start the week of July 9
Hours: 50 minutes in length.  Hours vary.

Meet the Instruments (1st through 4th grade) - CLASS IS FULL FOR SUMMER 2007
Clarinet, drums, flute, guitar, Latin percussion, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, violin and more!  During this week-long course, your child will learn the basics of each instrument, decide on a favorite and, by the end of the week, be able to play a tune!

Dance & Creative Movement  (Ages 3-8 years)               
Dance Classes are an excellent choice for active children!  Creative Dance, Pre Ballet, Making Dances and Ballet/Jazz-HipHop classes will be offered over a five-week period in July and August.  All Classes are 50 minutes in length.  Schedule to be determined.

BEGINNING PIANO CLASSES
(Ages 4-8 years)

If your child is showing an interest in learning an instrument, group piano lessons is a great place to start.  The fundamental musical skills taught in these classes help lay the foundation for any instrument training.  All classes are 50 minutes and will be held Monday – Thursday.

There will be two sessions offered for each class:
Session 1:
July 9-19
Session 2:
July 23-Aug 2

Music for Little Mozarts (Ages 4-6)
Cost:
$190* per session     
Time: 1:00pm and 3:00pm 
The Music for Little Mozarts is a joyful piano course specifically designed for children 4-6 years old, and includes activities that take into account their need to move, sing, play, and pretend. The story characters, Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear, model the teaching concepts of each lesson and invite the children to participate through the instructional activities. The series was designed to provide a balance between the discipline necessary for playing the instrument and the enjoyment one gets from the process of music-making.

*Tuition cost includes a required lesson book ($10) which can be purchased from the teacher on the first day of class.  An optional Materials Kit that includes a magnetic/dry erase activity board, two stuffed animals (Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse) and a vinyl carrying bag is available from Alfred Publishing.                   

Beginning Piano Class (Ages 7-8 years)
Cost:
$180 per session     
Time:
2:00pm and 4:00pm
This class offers a creative alternative to private lessons, where students will learn basics of rhythm, notation and ear training in a relaxed group setting that incorporates music and movement with basic keyboard skills.  By the end of the session students will be able to read and play simple melodies, recognize all notes on the keyboard, and understand the basics of rhythm and notation.  This class is a great introduction for students planning to start individual lessons in the fall, or for students looking to explore the basics of the keyboard. 

Optional Stay & Play
Add any one of our Beginning Instrument Classes to your Music & More Class and enjoy one hour of Stay & Play at a discounted rate! (May add Stay & Play to any piano, violin or percussion class if signed up for Music & More as well).
Cost: $300 per session
Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm

BEGINNING INSTRUMENT CLASSES
(Ages 4-adult)

All classes are 50 minutes and will be held Monday – Thursday.

Beginning Violin Class (Ages 5-10) - CANCELLED
This class is designed for the beginning student with little or no experience.  Students will learn the basics of how to hold the instrument, produce a good sound, and will be able to play simple melodies with basic rhythms by the end of the session.  The daily class structure eliminates the need for home practice and ensures that students will develop good habits from the very beginning!  Students will need to rent or have access to a violin before the class starts (contact BMS for rental information).  This class will be scheduled over two weeks, Monday through Thursday.

Beginning Percussion Class  (Ages 5-10)
Does your child love the rhythm of music, always clapping or stomping to a favorite song? This beginning percussion class is a great way to introduce percussion instruments including snare drum, drum set, hand drums, marimba, mallets and other bells and shakers. This class will be scheduled over two weeks, Monday through Thursday.

Beginning Percussion Class for Teens (Ages 12 and up)
This beginning percussion class introduces a fun and structured drumming experience. Students will be introduced to assorted percussion instruments including snare drum, drum set, hand drums, marimba, mallets and other bells and shakers. This class could lead to more formal drum lessons or help build rhythm skills for any student.

Beginning Guitar Class (Ages 9 to adult)
Guitar is a beautiful, versatile instrument that is comfortably learned in a group setting.  This 5 week class will cover the fundamentals of holding, tuning, and playing the guitar, progressively building skills each week.  Whether you’re learning guitar for the very first time or returning to the instrument after a long break, this course will help you build the skills you need to continue playing on your own or with others.  The teacher personalizes each class, teaching the music you love.  Past selections have included the Beatles, Norah Jones, and U2.  Please bring your guitar, a folder for handouts, and a pen/pencil to the first class.

PRIVATE LESSONS (All ages)

Summer is a perfect time to take private lessons. Seize the opportunity to try a new instrument, a new teacher, or get a head start on the new school year. Scheduling is flexible – sign up for as few or as many lessons as you’d like. Lessons and registration are offered all summer. All summer private lessons are held in Kennard House.

Instruction available for:
Accordion, Baritone/Euphonium, Banjo, Bassoon, Cello, Clarinet, Composition, Creative Movement, Drum Set, Flute, Early Childhood, French Horn, Guitar & Bass Guitar, Harp, Harpsichord, Marimba, Music Technology, Oboe, Percussion, Piano, Recorder, Saxophone, Theory, Trombone, Trumpet, Ukelele, Vibraphone, Viola, Violin, and Voice.

Summer Private Tuition Rates: Please call for Private Tuition rates. Lessons can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes long. There are no registration fees in the summer.

Registration for 2007-2008 School Year: The School will accept new student registrations in May 2007. Register early for the best selection of days and times. Families will hear from the school over the summer to arrange the details of the lesson placement.
